“Four-colour flag (Vierkleur)”
The flag designed by Dirk van der Hoff and was used for the first time on January 6, 1857, in Potchefstroom, and then, on February 23, in Pretoria. On 18 February 1958, the Parliament of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (literally: “The South African Republic”, the Boer Republics in the region of the Transvaal) adopted it as State flag.
The Boer Republic of the Transvaal was founded in 1852 and gained independence in 1856. It lost his freedom in 1877 and regained in 1881, with the victory of the Boers in the First War of Liberation.
In 1900 the ZAR was annexed to the British Empire. It officially abolished at the end of the Second War of Liberation, with the Treaty of Vereeniging on the 31 May 1902, which ended the Boer Republics.

No longer the Four-color wave,

we delivered her with tears,

she’s dead with us

disappeared in an honourable grave,

she’s gone with us

vanished in an honourable burial.

Happier are those who fell

when that Flag lifted,

then we, those with sorrowful souls,

saw her dragged in the dust,

then we, those with depressed souls,

saw her dragged into the dirt.

There is no pleasant morning for her beyond,

we divorce her forever,

stowed in the heart of the nation,

and dedicated to the Past,

stowed in the heart of the land,

and devoted to Memoir.

Dedicated to those who boldly carried her

combat the insolent enemy,

whose limp arms turned around her

when they entered death,

whose soft arms turned around her

when they came to an end.

Never let descendants forget them

as long as humanity will last,

until even the heavens are worn out,

and Cosmos totters until its fall,

until even the sky is worn out,

and Earth shakes till destruction.
